Transporting the powerchair with just a folding ramp and without tie-downs is cumbersome and potentially dangerous.
Since returning from England with the SnapDragon in August 2010, our attention has been on either Sam's dad, who died of a brain tumor in January 2011, or Peggy's Chronic Lyme Disease, which was diagnosed in February 2011. Because of Peggy's health we have decided that moving just Esra into and out of a van is enough for her for now. The 50 pound ramp and a powerchair will just have to wait at home.
2) Daytime Aide to provide life-skills training, inclusion in homemaking routine, companionship on community outings, academic review, safety in all settings and toileting assistance. We homeschool our children. Because of this, we have declined all services from the school district. We do receive State-funded Respite and Therapy services, as well as a very small amount of Habilitation hours. Our request for more Habilitation has been denied twice and we are appealing again. We believe Esra's needs require more than what is being provided. Her developmental delays and daily needs demonstrate a need for one-on-one assistance throughout her at-home school day. We are looking for someone with Special Education experience who also can help with Habilitation and medical needs connected to toileting and feeding.
3) Eliminate barriers to the backyard. There are thresholds in a four areas in the back yard that require some accommodation so Esra can navigate the back yard on her own. Even the powerchair cannot go over them because of the texture or incline of a certain transition from grass to concrete and concrete to metal.
4) Adding accessible elements to the backyard for play and learning: Tables, Water Wall, Places to Hide, Playhouse, etc.
5) A Trailer Bike. Something like the Piggyback or the Weehoo.
6) Cash Donations for Respite Care. Most of our Respite hours are used for Peggy during the mornings. The remainder are used for a weekly date night. But Sam would like to pursue his engineering research one evening per week. But when he comes home, he usually relieves Peggy from her caregiving duties. Please help give Sam a break.
7) Vision Therapy (not covered by insurance).
8) Music Therapy (not covered by insurance).
9) Harp Therapy (not covered by insurance). This therapeutic respite service is provided by Jocelyn Obermeyer of The Harp Foundation. She charges $40/hour.
10) Adjusting various table heights in our home to accommodate Esra's new manual wheelchair.
11) Patching drywall.
12) Clothe diapers. Because of Esra's bowel and bladder challenges, we see her needing diapers for the time being. Because we have been using diapers with her for almost six years, we found clothe diapers to be the best choice for our family. The brand we use is BumGenius 3.0. After three years of constant use they are quite worn out. We could use help in replacing a weeks worth of covers and inserts. (3 diapers/day x 7 days = 21 diapers at @$18 each= $378.) The State will pay for disposable diapers but not clothe, even though they are healthier for the child and less expensive overall.
